Before digital photography, photography was shot on film, chemical rolls that captured light with nautral texture and depth giving us unpredictable beauty.
Film has character. Some rolls gave soft skin tones, others rich shadows or pastel hues.
However with film everything is manual and things like dynamic range and resolution are poor by today’s standards so how do we chase that look without the draw backs?
Film Simulations are the answer to that.
Fujifilm’s cameras are built on decades of film history. Their film simulations are digital recreations of iconic film stocks, developed in-house with the same attention to colour science as their analog counterparts.
There is no one simulation that beats all as every scene is different.
Below are some examples of the many film simulations you can choose from.
I also have emulations for Kodak too which is the other large film manufacturer
While film simulations are inspired by reels, they’re still digital tools and part of a broader process of intentional colour grading.
I use Fujifilm’s simulations as a starting point, then make subtle adjustments in Lightroom based on emotion, light, and story.
Whether it’s a soft, nostalgic tone for a wedding, a crisp, true to life look for product work, or rich shadows for a moody portrait, every moment is shaped with care.
If you have a particular look in mind, I’m always happy to adapt. Because colour isn’t just technical, it’s emotional.
