Why Medium Format?

I work with a medium format system because it produces a different kind of image, one that feels more natural, detailed, and true to the moment.

It’s a slower, more intentional way of shooting, but one that allows for greater depth, colour and presence in each frame.

Sensor Size

Below we compare a full-frame sensor versus a larger GFX sensor (medium format). The larger sensor captures more light and detail, resulting in cleaner images with greater depth, especially noticeable in skin tones and subtle textures.

Zoom out?

A common question is whether the same result can be achieved by simply stepping back or using a wider lens.

While the framing can be similar, the result isn’t the same. Medium format allows for a more natural perspective, reducing distortion and keeping proportions true to life.

Framing

Below, the first image shows the field of view from a full-frame sensor. The second shows the full composition from medium format.

This shows how large the sensor is, with less distortion, no stepping back, providing a stronger sense of scale.

Resolution

Medium format gives you more resolution. For example, I capture 102mp which is far larger than the average seen on the market today.

See below for a cropped in comparison of the difference

Below is a video showing a zoom-out from one of these full-res files.

This image was captured wide open, where most lenses are typically at their softest.

Dynamic Range

Medium format allows you to recover detail from deep shadows without introducing noise, losing contrast, or needing heavy editing.

Below shows a RAW file straight with no edits, moving the slider to the left increases the brightness by 32x without much loss in quality.

Ultimately, the goal isn’t the equipment itself, but the way it shapes the final image.

Medium format simply supports the kind of work I aim to create: natural, detailed, and lasting.
